You cannot walk the streets of Nozawa without spotting Oyaki - steamed dumplings filled with anything from Nozawana to Nagano’s famous apples.
Nothing builds an appetite like a day skiing or boarding Japanese powder, and nothing hits the spot like Japanese mountain food. But that moment of taste induced happiness need not only last as long as your time in Nozawa; why not try your hand at learning some classic staples of Japanese mountain life?
Oyaki can be found steaming all over Nozawa, just look for the distinctive wooden boxes that line the street at regular intervals. Nothing can compare to walking the snowy streets of the village with a piping hot Oyaki in hand. This class teaches you exactly how to take the taste of this little memory home with you! Nozawa-na (local pickle) and red bean will fill your creations today, and even give you the chance to hand decorate them. You'll most probably even have a couple of leftovers to take back with you for that late-night snack.
Who will Teach You
All the cooking teachers are local culinarians, using their many years of experience to ensure that the traditional ways of cooking are kept alive. Don't fear any language barrier either; all classes are accompanied by a guide and translator to ensure that you get the full benefit of your experience!
